Odelys Valdes-Santiago's profile

Page Out - Animated Short Film 2024

Welcome, everyone!ย  My name is Odelys Valdes-Santiago, who created the animated short film, "Page Out," from screenwritingย to editing, for Senior Project.ย  During a journey of less than 15 weeks, I completed a two-minute film filled with comedy and adventure for nuclear families to enjoy.

A dog character grows weary of his storybook world and decides to escapeย it to explore beyond an art studio where he resides.

Below demonstrates both the final piece as well as the weekly tasks to produce this unique film.ย  Hope you enjoy!
Final Film
This is work in progress.ย  Final film will be added soon.ย  Thank you for your patience.

Original Animatic
This is the first version of the film's animatic, which experiencedย small changes to engage viewers into the unique setting.ย  Notice the audio and soundtrack also greatly differ from the final piece.
Pre-production
Check 1
Also viewed as the pitching week, "Page Out" emerged with different character designs and a story with small differences to the final version.ย  Surprisingly, the setting's angles remained similar to their respective final looks.
Preliminary storyboard.
Setting concept art.
Preliminary protagonist character design.
Check 2
The second week turned heavier than the first week, since it required a completeย weekly schedule (which experienced multiple updates), a shot list, and a finished early animatic.ย ย
Short peek of the actual weekly schedule with complete tasks.ย ย
Screenshot of the complete shot list, which remained unchanged.
Still frames of the original animatic include the title card and the dog in various mishaps.
Check 3
As the weeks turned heavier and heavier, this third check-in includes an updated animatic (checkย Week 4), the final character design's model sheet, the main character's expressions, and some background sketches.
Basic character breakdown features some elements which were slightly ignored during production to reduce complexity, such as the eyes' gaps and the perfectly round spot.
These background design sketches seem less stylish than their final versions to understand the proportions of the environment.
Check 4
For this week, I planned the potential color palette for the backgrounds and the background's respective shots, sketched the cup turnaround and developed their vector versions in Adobe Illustrator, and created a vector mouse in advance.ย  I also updated the animatic once more.
Version 3 of the animatic, with changes closer to the final film.
Check 5โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹
Due to having an extra day to work on Senior Project, I developed detailed backgrounds in Adobe Illustrator and sketched some title designs (none which were final).

Production officially began around week 6, where I began leaving some tasks incomplete due to tight schedules.ย  I also created some book pages and a saw assets in Adobe Illustrator which appear in the film.ย  I began animating the cameras from a few shots as well as tested the lighting in render.ย  I also created the rough sketch animation for a few close-up shots.ย  Here, I learned importing Illustrator works into Toon Boom was time-consuming, yet rewarding.
Original Poster
I finalized a poster for the short film with finalized logo design and style close to actual film.ย  The logo received some feedback, leading to a title design somewhat unrelated to proposed sketches.
Thank You!
Thank you for being part of this adventure.
